tell what year this Evinrude is from the cowling design?

I found a boat for sale that i might be interested in... it's a '95 Ranger with an Evinrude 150... not sure of the year, but it notes that it's got an h.o. lower unit and a 24 pitch Raker prop. I thought some of you Evinrude experts might be able to recognize the year from the cowling design. I've looked around the internet and on BBC, haven't come across one that looks like it, but I know I've seen it before. Anyway, I think it's a later 1990s version. Any ideas would be appreciated!

I kow a guy that has a Stratos J series with a 2002 Evinrude 150 that has the same design/graphics on the cowl. If my memory is correct OMC used that style starting in 2000 and BRP changed the cowl in 2003. It looks like a Ficht Ram Injection cowl. I am positive it is newer than 99...2000-2003 will be very close.

Looking on shopevinrude.com the picture of the 2000 style of hood does not match. 02 has a round BRP sticker and 01 does not. Looking at the picture you posted I would say 01

it looks like my 01 motor in a 225,ho but cant see the lower to see if its the lightin ho lower but its easy to tell by looking at nose and water inlets, which are 3 holes per side, and they really had a lot of trouble out of 'em.

looks like a ficht on my buddies Stratos 98 I thnik but check the numbers and go on the evinrude sight???? a closer pic would be more helpful also

You could check the sales brochures http://www.bbcboards.net/zerothread?id=397772 or get the model number and remove all doubt.

by the way, the link for the 2001 model Evinrude on the brochures page points to the 2000 model. I was able to find my way to the 2001, but it took some searching. Whoever keeps up that page might want to take a look at that link.

That cowl design with the rear air intake was introduced in 2001 by OMC, before they closed up shop in Dec. 2000.

My guess is that the cover is a 2001 because the 2002 and later Bombardier built motors had 3 red stripes on each side.

Only the engine model number will tell what the powerhead is.

You may be strangling your motor. Not enough air flow. Does it run faster with the cover off?

@ 73.4 I haven't felt the need to remove the cover??? Would it be safe if I kept the airbox on?
