    225HO won't idle

    Rusty,

Lower unit gears stripped at wot and felt like spun hub. Rpm profile showed 6450 max. Warranty replaced lower unit and now motor will not idle without pressing on hotfoot slightly to raise rpms. Had almost new plugs in when lower unit failed and just replaced plugs gapped to 0.035. Motor always dies when put in and out of gear until ran a few minutes to warm up and seems to idle too low when in gear and dies several times till ran on plane. Idles at 500-600 rpm and around 400 in gear. Can idle be raised or is it only computer controlled and could high rpm's damaged anything when LU failed. Motor has always had a tendancy to die when put in or out of gear till warmed up, but not as bad or often as it is now and idle seems lower. Sometimes when first started it sounds like motor is struggling to run and makes a squeeking noise till rpms raise slightly.

I think you need to get back to your dealer and have them go over it.

By the way, the plugs should be gapped to 0.028.

2003 225HO, Rusty, what would you think might cause this or what would you check first. Would 0.035 spark plug gap affect the idle or engine performance.

I dont think the plug gap would cause this problem.

I would treat this like any other motor and check the compression, spark, and then look at a multitude of other things that could cause this.

This is one of those problems that needs hands on attention.

    Re: 225HO won't idle (dalehollownut)

There is no manual idle adjustment on your motor.

I had the same problem with my 2002 200 ficht. The dealer f'd around for 9 months trying to fix the problem. First fuel pressure (new pump - filter), then vapor separator (new also), thermostats, timing changes, etc. Finally, the dealer sent the EMM to BRP and the corresponding injector codes were reprogrammed into the EMM thereby fixing the problem. It turns out that the EMM went into some sort of default mode where each injector's corresponding flow modes go into a safty config which protects the motor from going pop. Each new injector is flow patterned at the factory and programmed to its flow characteristics. If the EMM loses this code it resorts to its default mode. I like yourself had problems spinning props, 3 to be exact - 2 of which were PowerTech.

By the time it was all done, I was so pissed off with the dealer and their incompetence that I'll never go back. As big of a "made in america" fan as I am it is the last BRP boat motor that I'll ever own. Too complicated, thank the lord for the warranty. The dealers total billings were over $3600 - a crock of s__t. I guess there is something to be said about those old gas gusseling carb'd motors. $3600 would buy a lot of feul... Still can't make up for half a lost fishing season...

I wish someone would have had this info for me at the time. GET THE EMM CHECKED OUT OR REPROGRAMMED.

    Good luck

This sounds like a problem with the dealer not being able to fix the problem, its a shame you feel this way about your motor because of one dealer.
