one of the trim switches is bad, most likely the one up front, they get water in them and go bad,I had the same problem early this year and another member suggested that and that was it , I also have had trouble out of the trim switch on the steering wheel doing the same but it was wire that got the insulation rubbed off it and was touching metal.

Check your trolling motor cables. My brothers cable sat on his bow switch and drove him crazy till I found the problem

Great response on the trolling cables. I've had that too. MY Evinrude has two relays that control the motor one of them could be failing. They are interchangable so you could swap them and see if the symptom changes to down. Also, the trim button on the throttle sometimes gets pieces of rubber from the splash guard stuck in it and will cause runaway trim. Make sure it still "clicks" in both the down and up mode. I'm sure other more expert advisers will share info on your problem. Good luck.

been busy at work since sunday but i came home today connected the battery and the engine trimmed like there was never a problem . the boat was soaked in a storm saturday while fishing so i didnt cover it and it got rained on in the yard sunday morning . the sun has been on it since yesterday which has me thinking the soaking it received was the culprit . what should i do now ?

It was probably the rocker switch on the bow! I would replace it because you will get caught in the rain and it will act up again.

Keithmd, I had the same thing happen to my Stratos several months ago. I checked out several possible sources of concern and found my problem to be shorted wires to the switch located in the shift lever. After removingthe shift control lever and repairing the wires to the trim switch all is fine. I would suggest that check the front control switch with an ohmn meter to see if it is doing its job and check the wiring harness to see if there are andy bare spots. Once you so this I would seal these contact with dielectric grease. This grease can be purchased at just about every shop doing electronics work.
