OMC Binnacle starting in gear

I've got an eight year old OMC Binnacle single control with ignition switch and trim (P/N 0176372) that is allowing me to start the motor while in gear. Discovered by accident; don't know how long this has been going on with this new to me boat.

Can't quite tell from the parts diagram; is this a mechanical lock out or an electrical switch that isn't functioning?

Anybody have any experience fixing this?

the neutral safety switch is inside your control and there should be 2 yellow or yellow/red striped wires coming from it that should be connected inline with the keyswitch yellow/red and the yellow/red going to the motor.

It doesn't appear to be a seperate P/N on diagram; must be included with wiring assembly.

Just noticed something funny on the BRP Online Parts diagrams: I have the Binnacle Single Lever with Ignition & Trim (P/N 0176372) which does not show or list a Neutral Safety Switch. However, on the same Binnacle without the Ignition the Neutral Safety Switch shows as P/N 0176757.
