Johnny, for a guy stuck off down in Katy, you sure seem to know a lot about this part of the country ... what gives?
Grew up in Abilene. Graduated from Wylie High School on Buffalo Gap Rd, back when all 12 grades were on one campus in a total of 3 buildings. Lived out towards Potosi, off of 1750. Left for college and never went back except to visit.
I live on Wagon Wheel Ave. I figure it probably wasn't there when you left town. It's a mile south of your old high school on Buffalo Gap Rd. I got here 10 years ago. Spent the first 42 years in and around the Plainview area. Never figured I leave there, but now don't miss it or the high plains at all. My work takes me back that way on a regular basis so I stop in and see my folks in Plainview when I'm through there.
I remember in the mid 70s coming to Abilene to visit my wife's sister & hubby. She was going to HSU. That was still in the dry days & we'd go to Buffalo Gap for catfish & cold beer. Seemed like a pretty long run at the time. Now I live about 4 miles from the curve going into Buffalo Gap and I'm still in the Abilene city limits where I live.
We did spend about 9 months in Friendswood about 6 years ago. The wife hated it! I didn't mind it too much, except I wasn't very close to any fresh water.
I always liked Abilene, but there just wasn't much back in the 70's that you could do to make a good living. So, I wound up in the oilfield after getting out of A&M and Odessa was the closest I ever got to being back home. The folks retired nearly 25 years ago and moved so I haven't had any reason to go back. I went back to a high school reunion, but the last time I went was 1992 and haven't been in Abilene since. I'm sure I wouldn't recognize the place. Wylie has been in 3 different high school buildings in various places since I got out. My folks went out a few years ago to a basketball tournament to what they thought was the new high school, and it had been turned into a middle school and another new high school built. Guess that's a booming area right now.
Population is knocking on 120K. I don't know how long they've been in the new Wylie High School, but when our son transfered here he finished his last two years in the new one and graduated in 99. I wouldn't say it's booming, although there's a lot of new homes being built. Potosi is the area that's really growing. There are 4-5 new subdivisions out there. I can't figure out how folks are making the money to buy some of these new homes unless they're getting 40 yr mortgages and hocking themselves to their eyeballs!! Abilene ain't known for its high wages. We ended up in Friendswood because my job went away and I couldn't begin to touch the income I had. However an oppurtunity presented itsself right after the firs of the year in 2001 and we were able to come back. Our house had been on the market for over 6 months and hadn't sold, so that was a blessing to move right back into it.
What is this OLD Home coming for you and Johnny????![]()
