2014 Mercury Optimax 250 Proxs and running two Lowrance HDS (12 and 9). Looking at the approved batteries list and I see the Deka Intimidator 8A31DTM is on the list. I am curious as to why the Duracell AGM 31 is not the list? Isn't the Duracell AGM 31 made by Deka? I am going to replace all my batteries so I thought I might just get 4 of the Duracell AGM 31's at Sam's?

Based on the provided specifications, this battery is NOT well suited to a fishing application, as it just barely meets the requirements for the ENGINE ALONE (before adding pumps, livewells, graphs, and various other gizmos).

Just replaced an Exide MegaCycle 31-MCX with a NAPA Commercial battery P/N 7235 today.
My Exide stuttered a couple of times last year when starting after fishing for a while and figured it was time to replace. The Exide was in my boat when I bought it used May 2012. The date wasn't stamped on top but noticed the manufacture date on the side after I took it out of the boat: Nov 07.
The NAPA 7235 has good specs: 1125 cca @ 0*F, 1380 ca @ 32*F, 195 reserve capacity. Measured 12.66v with a DVM before charging and only took a short time to show fully charged after I plugged it in. I thought the battery would need water added as needed but appears to be maintenance free as there is no vent caps to remove.

EDIT: It was brought to my attention from a BBC member that has a NAPA commercial battery in his boat that there are vent caps under the sticker but has not removed the sticker or added water in the 3 years he has had the battery. Might be a good idea to remove the sticker and check the levels for each cell after the warranty has expired and add distilled water as needed.

Close. East Penn makes Deka, Duracell, and even the O'Reilly marine batteries. All are equal given the same size. All will work well. I use G27's myself, one for cranking, two deep cycle marine for ™. Never had an issue fishing all day without charging.

That linked battery has 950CCA (exceeds minimum 800CCA) and is what Don recommends for a fishing application. A little weak on RC but certainly more than adequate.

what is the difference between a red top battery and blue top? can I use a red top optima as a cranking battery if it meets theCA spec?

Red Tops are only available in smaller sizes and have automotive terminals. They have substantially less reserve capacity than Blue Tops which are already low reserve batteries. I wouldn’t consider it a good choice if you use the boat for anything but riding around.

nothing else matters.

I have a really light 'go fast' boat with mercury 300xs optimax want to keep weight as low as possible what os my best choice for a battery? Now have optima bluetop 75 ah. No extra stuff on board only hydraulic jackplate and verado powersteering.

Free shipping, it is a heavy battery but I run everything listed below and lots of night fishing and has done well so far. Had the Sam's duracell and it only lasted 2 years, but that was the minimum and it gave a low voltage alarm in winter at 1st start up, within the first year of service. Added a house battery for electronics then bought this.
