    Tach working intermittently?

1991 200GT the tach works intermittently. Sometimes it's dead at idle then as I run up to plane it will jump up and start working. I have tried to jiggle all the wires to see if I get a change but no luck.

mine was doing that on my 1992 140, I did some searching on here and discovered it's most likely either a bad tach or a bad reg/rectifier. I just tested it today, check voltage across the gray wire to black while idling...nothing. Tested across the purple to black with just the ignition on, got juice. I believe that means I need a reg/rectifier. I'm going to replace that ASAP, if I had been getting a reading across the gray to black at idle it would have been a bad tach.

before anything get ya real small flat head[mine was] screwdriver and get under the dash to back of the tach and find the settings screw and work it back an forth a few times, sometimes it gets corrosion on the contact and you can work it off like that

Re: Tach working intermittently? (rude power)

This seems to be a common problem recently with older motors. My 94 did this and I tried to rotate the tach setting screw like others have suggested, tried running a new wire from rectifier to tach, and even replaced the tach. After all this failed, I replaced the rectifier and it is working great, so that more than likely is your issue. I'm not extremely mechanically inclined, and I was able to replace the rectifier in about an hour and a half. I would suggest taking digital pictures to go back and look to see where ALL those wires go......
