    omc sterndrive w/p

My buddy asked if i could help him change his water impeller in his ski boat. I said sure, I have changed them in my mercury and several mercruisers. When I got there I couldn't even find it Any one ever done one of these that could point me in the right direction. It is a 83 or so omc sterndrive 3.8l m#983487

I see it but how do you get at it. Out the top or drop the lower.

If this has a water pump on the front of the engine like a car does it have an impeller in the outdrive. I dropped the lower unit and there is nothing that could hold an impeller. If its in the upper gear housing I dont see how it pumps the water up to the engine. Also I put the muffs on and there is no water circuating in the motor.

It's been years since I played with one of those old monstosities. You pull the shift cable thru the transom and drop the lower unit. The upper stays and the impeller is inslde the aluminum housing held on the upper with 4 long bolts with 3/4" hex heads if I remember correctly.

It is a good idea to drain the upper unit and also use Permatex #2 on the bolt threads. Most likely the impeller, plate, and aluminum housing will need replaceing. Check both the male and female splines in the short shaft as they wear quickly if not lubed with MolyLube and can spin out and leave you stranded.

No, the pump is at the bottom of the upper gear box.

Ok Thanks. My questions is If the pump is in the upper where does it suck the water from. The reason I ask this is because it doesnt have any tubes going down to the lower like the merc its just has the electric shift wires. Thanks again for your help.

Better get a manual before attempting anything.
