1990 Johnson 200, prop shaft has about 1/8" fore-aft play. To me that seems excessive, but I can't find any information on this in the factory service manual.

1/8" is most excessive. You have the older 1-3/16" propshaft, which required no spacer ring to wear out. I would look into this A.S.A.P. All the cases have @ .070 at maximum endplay as a rule of thumb. Make sure the 4 bolts holding the carrier in place are tight.![]()
