    Lower Unit Leaking Oil

I have a 1986 Johnson GT150 that I just had the lower unit resealed and paid $390 to get it done. I've had it on the water once and after pulling it out of the water I noticed there was some fishing line around the prop shaft. I removed the prop and got all the line out. I have not had it in the water since but when i trimmed the motor down in the garage it left a small puddle of green oil on the floor. I fear that the prop shaft seal was wrecked by the fishing line. Would the line have damaged any other seals or should I be safe to just replace my prop shaft seals?

    Thanks in advancce, Scott

More than likely you have torn the seals because of the fishing line, allowing it to leak. You can do these seals without removing the case, but you need to pull the carrier to get to the seals. You can use a harmonic balancer puller for this if you have one, using a couple of 5/16" all thread pieces.

Thank you for your response. I will replace the seals and hope that fixes the leak. I've read that you can remove them simply by drilling 2 small holes in them and using self tapping screws and vice grips to pull them out. Is there any truth to this or does the carrier definately need to come out?

To do it properly pull the carrier, use a seal puller to remove them and a seal driver to install them. They go back to back and while the carrier is out replace the O ring on the front of the carrier and run a bead of blue RTV around it.

OK. Thanks a lot. I'll give that a shot. At least the carrier should come out easily since it was just removed a week ago when all the seals were replaced.
