Manual states for reassembly, quote:

Place a small amount of Loctite 271 onto threads of pinion gear nut and install flatwasher and nut on driveshaft with flat side of nut away from pinion gear.

Which side of the Pinion Gear is that, side with step or it's back side with is totally flat ?????
