    I just bought a 1987 Procraft, 19.5' with an Evinrude XP150...carb problems?

Hello all, this is my first post.

So I bought this boat about 3 weeks ago. I've already done some re-wiring on it the motor. Honestly, it needs a new wiring harness. Can you buy them?

Well, here is my most important question. The motor is VERY cold natured....it seems to only be running on 2 or 3 cylinders until it "warms up", then it runs pretty good all day.

It will periodically die when going from Nuetral to forward...but it will pull my 220lb butt out of the water on a slalom ski with 4 adults and a 5 yr old on the boat.

So while debugging, I noticed the middle carbaretor is dripping fuel out of the bottom...and the engine smokes alot until I get it going good.

Compression is about 90Psi on 5 cylinders...I think one was like 85Psi. I have a bunch of questions!

So how hard is it to rebuild the carbs? I'm mechanically inclined (I've replaced clutches on Front wheel drive cars, I do all my own vehicular maintenance, etc...).

    Should I de-carb before I rebuild?

Has anyone scanned pages of instructions for rebuilding carbaretors and uploaded them yet?

Are the "Chilton" repair manuals ok?

    Are there "boat salvage yards"?

Sorry....I'll take any answers I can get!

    Happy boating!

    Welcome aboard,

The gurus are looking for a model and serial number so they can help you solve any problem you are having with your engine.

I can suggest that you should buy yourself a good "factory" manual. Click on this link and order yours from Ken Cook, this will be the best that you can get for your engine. http://www.outboardbooks.com/

Compression gauges reading will vary some but yours seem to be on target. I think with a good carb cleaning, a link & sync, new spark plugs, and a new water pump you should be on your way to some happy boating.

If I left anything out them big shot, high fluting gurus will be along shortly and make any needed adjustments to my comments and smack my upside the head if I stirred you wrong.

    Good luck,

If you can't run with the big dogs, just stay on the porch.

Yeah...I'm at work, I don't have the serial #...I thought XP150 was the model Number. I was wrong....

I'll get that when I go home in a couple of hours.

Looking at the carbs....the gaskets appear new....like they have been rebuilt.

I don't mind rebuilding them, mainly cause I don't know what was done...how good of a job...etc.......I will rebuild them, but would like to avoid if possible. I'd rather pay $75 for someone to "tune" them if that is possible.

One of the bowls is leaking gas as in another post...that originally led me to believe the carbs needed rebuilding.

Now I'm just wondering if I can sand down the plastic a little as stated in another post about my exact same engine.

Dad-gum it. I just wanted to avoid spending big money...I just spent $100 in rebuild kits and an impellar.

I don't mind spending $100...unless I don't need to!!!! That is what I want to avoid. I'm about to spend another $35.00 on a manual....which I know I need....but....$35.00 here and there kicks my butt!!!

The best money you could spend right now would be for a service and owners manual for your engine.

I sanded the float bowls on mine, and it's been bone dry ever since. Once you've got the manual, do a decarb and go through the link-n-sync procedures like the wise Dofer Gofer suggested. That's a great motor, and with a little mechanical ability and a factory manual, you can avoid parting with any more of your money than you have to.

Finding this board was the best thing you could have done (getting a factory manual will be the second best)!!

    Good luck!

Yes guys, I found the manual!

I sure as heck didn't want to spend the extra money...but knew I'd be foolish not to.

I found it for $35.00 delivered! Can you believe that? I hope this is the good one!

So I got the "best manual"? Or is there a better one?

    Thanks by the way!

I sanded mine down, the previous owner/mechanic??? whoever had overtightened them and they were leaking. Make sure after you sand yours down you don't overtighten them

Well, my car has broken down..and I'm down to riding my motorcycle. Waiting for till MOnday or Tuesday for the parts to come in for my car.

I'm going to try to work on the boat tonight since I can't work on my car.

on a side note...with no car, my 5 yr old son and I have been having to ride bicycles to his school...which is only about 1 mile away....sort of fun...but ads a few minutes to my morning!

Good morning, and I am sorry to hear about your car putting you down. At any rate, keep us informed about your boat. We didn't advise you to get a manual and then abandon you to repair it all by yourself. We are still here.

Best regards and enjoy the bike rides to school with your son.

I've removed the carbs again...and dad gum it if I didn't drop one of them!!!!

    I've re-adjusted the floats. Making sure they are 1" +/- 1/8".

What do you guys think about the damage from dropping the carburetor?

I'm taking it to Rockwall Marine here in a few.

    See image below.

    Thanks
