Re: Bass fishing around Gulf Shores (Bass_engineer)

years ago, Lake Shelby used to turn out 3lb crappie routinely and bass in the 7-8lb range (80's to early 90's.) I haven't been there in years though and heard the hurricanes took a toll on it and silted it in so that the average water depth is only about 5-6'. it used to be much deeper. My uncle has told me that a few folks still ease through to the back "lakes" and catch some big bass but not many. there are two smaller areas behind the main lake connected by small canals (or there was back in 98 which was the last time i was there.) the back two lakes and canals used to harbor bass. lots of grass and laydowns. crappie used to be on the main lake and you could find them on your depthfinder and drift through them.

i am not sure what else is down there that would have any bass. maybe someone else will post.

Lake Shelby at Gulf States Park used to have some chunks, been 10 years since I fished it.

Lake Shelby (directly across the street from the Gulf of Mexico) bass fishing is pretty much non-existant now. One of the hurricanes a few years ago pretty much wiped out all of the fresh water species of fish in it with all of the salt water dumped in the lake. You might can catch a few in the canals that run off of the lake, but it wouldn't be worth the time or effort you'd have to put in for it. If it were me, I wouldn't pull the boat down hoping to bass fish there.

The Mobile Delta is about an hour drive or so from Gulf Shores, and that would be the closest place to really get into some bass.

Lake Shelby... I fished it years ago and did good, but like the others said the hurricanes did major damage to the fish population. But I'll bet there are still some big ol gators homesteading the lake..
