    looper tilt cylinder leaking

I sure hope someone can help me out, the tilt cylinder was leaking on my 85' 140 HP Evinrude.

I decided to replace the seals myself, it seems a pretty straightforward process, I was a mechanic for a couple of years so a simple seal replacement should'nt be a problem.

I've got the unit off, replaced all the seals but one...which happens to be the one I need. The cap on the tilt cylinder has a press in seal on the top, I've removed the seal but the BRP seal kit does not have this seal in it. I've looked online with no luck finding the part number to the seal.

I have seen a thread where the guy was told to replace the entire cap with a new one that comes with a new seal. The cap assembly is around $100, seems quite the waste to spend that much because a $2 seal is no good.

Does anyone have the part number to this seal and a way I can order it?

I do know the answer but you ain't gonna like it. In the old days you could change the wiper but now you can't you've got to either find a used TNT or eat the cost of new. Check your tilt ram for indentations or you are doing the replacement for not. New ram is $700.00 plus the wiper.

    LockhartMarine,

I need the seal (I guess wiper?) that goes in the top of this cap. see the red arrow. The seal (wiper) that was in in was a rubber seal molded into a steel retainer, this pressed in. The kit did not have this, there was an all rubber seal but there is no way for it to stay in there.

    i have looked,and looked,all thru the 80's,and cant find the cap u have,...however,...i tell u what i'd do,...i'd look on the diagram,determine,which tilt cyl u have,and order the appropriate cap,and o ring/wiper,and repl the strange one,so this wont occur again.. shop.evinrude.com

Re: looper tilt cylinder leaking (LockhartMarine)

Depending on which trim/tilt unit you have you can still get the wiper and o ring. If your tilt ram has a hex nut on the bottom you have a Showa system and you need part number 390007 if you have the Prestolite that has a round ram at the end then you need part number 174003. Both are still available.

Re: looper tilt cylinder leaking (ChampioNman)

Got it!!! its now installed and no leaks.

turns out when I ordered the kit for all the o-rings for the entire tilt and trim it comes with the o-rings for the prestolight tilt cylinder, apparently the trim cylinders are all idenical.

After looking at the link lockhart marine sent me I could tell I have a showa tilt cylinder and needed P/N 390007.

Thanks a bunch campionman and lockhart marine.
