Echo chirp 93vs Interference!!

Just installed one on my trolling motor and it has severe interference while trolling! I have a older motorguide tour edition 36v. Ive tried grounding every which way and fixing to drop motor off at shop to get it inspected and to shunt the ground. Hope this works...lots of money not to be able to use correctly!! Has anyone else had success clearing interfernce??

Just to vent a little Garmin has the worst customer service I've ever dealt with!! They said why do I have to have the transducer on the trolling motor anyhow?!?!

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

I have the same unit. I haven't installed it yet because I'm still researching it. 99% sure it's going on the transom just to avoid this issue.

I've got three units being installed on the new boat, 93sv on the bow with a MK Fortrex, all I've read lately are issues with interference, I certainly hope this is not the case when I get on the water....

Trolling motor interference has been around a very long time. Nothing new about it; just may be new to you. Most of the time it comes from two technologies used in the trolling motor. One is the infinite (variable) speed control. The other is the so-called battery saver technology. Internally instead of a continuous connection the power is pulsed very fast on/off/on/off.... It is so fast that it seems continuous. I discovered this when I had a Minn Kota Maxxum. After trying all of Humminbird's suggestions I finally gave up and bought an Edge 70. No battery saver tech and discrete 1,2,3,4,5 speed control. No more interference. Since then I've switched to Lowrance and later to Garmin; all without interference including Panoptix. I understand that may not be an option for you. Just pointing out that where the problem is.

When Humminbird first came out with side imaging, it was a really big issue. They developed a guide to help eliminate this problem. It's trial and error and sometimes it resolves the issue and sometimes it doesn't . The guide is for Humminbird units but the same thing applies to Lowrance and Garmin.

I'm sorry you are having this problem and I do feel your pain; or at least I did at one time for over a year without resolution until I replaced the trolling motor. At the time I was using Humminbird units. Two people can follow this procedure and it work for one and fail for the other. I hope something in it resolves your problems.

According to that link, all the 2013 and later Terrovas have all the grounds and chokes already built in. Im hoping I will be OK.

When you run a wire from skegg on TM to ground....is that the same as grounding the brushes inside of motor? I'm kinda confused...

Maybe, maybe not. As you rotate from 1 to 5 is this smooth or can you feel that at each number there is a switch point.

I think that will some perseverance most are able to reduce the interference to a tolerable point.

Basically the steps include:
-checking fuse inside trolling motor head - if it has one or has one and is shot
-wiring and cable isolation
-chokes/ferrites and Humminbird PC-11 kit
-Noise/Interference filter settings in software
-separate added ground wire to trolling motor skeg. Drill and attach with screw.
-fused ground wire from trolling motor battery to cranking battery

This did eliminate it all on my Maxxum except for spikes when the trolling motor was engaged.
This is a really bad situation and doesn't get enough attention. It has been around for over 10 years and the list above pretty well encompasses efforts to resolve it. Johnson owns both Humminbird and Minn Kota and this is the best they can offer??? Apparently it is. Absolutely no chance that I am going to spend the big bucks for one of the high end trolling motors and have to take such a risk that my sonar will be so disrupted. It really doesn't comfort me that some people post that they don't have any problems. I'm never that lucky.

I don't guarantee that the Edge series won't produce interference. I can say that I've worn out three different ones over the last several years and had zero interference on Humminbird, Vexilar, Lowrance and Garmin. I have a new one sitting in the garage waiting its turn. If you are shopping for one check Basspro, Cabelas, ebay, Amazon and Walmart online.

A Minn Kota shop could likely convert your Maxxum. Pretty sure the fancy electronics are in the foot control.

I had interference from my trolling motor. attached picture shows a couple bumps on the motor before I addressed it. I drilled a thru hole in the skeg of my maxxum and installed a #10 screw with a washer/lock nut on the back. The hole was small enough so that it was an interference fit, or self tapping so that I had good bite into the skeg. I ran a 16-gauge wire from there to the ground block up under to bow where the TM is wired up to the battery wires.
For me this cleared up all the interference. also, I kept the ground wire and fishfinder wires opposite each other as much as possible going back up the trolling motor. Along with the Raymarine, I also have a garmin up front with no interference. Hope this helps.
