    Adding a jack plate to a 2000 Renegade 18 - question

Will I need new/longer steering cables to allow for the motor set back?
    Johnson 150

Also, how long are the transom bolts for the JP and "motor mount to the JP bolts"?
    Thank you,
    Barry

You will need to some how figure if you have any slack in the steering cables. If they tight already you will need new ones. It will take about 10 inchs of extra cable for a 6 inch plate, thats 6 in for plate, and 2 or 3 in for the turn you will need not to bind up the cables. just my 2cents

Not sure about your Renegade, but I just fitted an 8" to a 285 pro XL. I have hydraulic steering and my hoses were long enough. You only need about 3" of slack in them, and I had more than that under the decks where the hoses sagged down. I bought a set of bolts from Bob's, but unfortunately the long bolts were not long enough for transom. They supplied 3 1/2" and I needed 4 1/2" bolts. The motor to plate bolts were 2 1/2"

My local marina has a stainless bolt kit with 4 bolts washers and nuts for mounting the engine to the plate that sells for 19.99. You use the bolts that are already in the transom to mount the plate to the transom.

I got a 2001 19ss Stratos and I put a 6 in hyd. plate on mine and there was no problems, I think the Javelin and the Stratos are pretty similar. Hope this helps.

My 389 Javelin had no issues with cables when I installed mine, there was enough slack in the compartment to compensate!

Re: Adding a jack plate to a 2000 Renegade 18 - question (Mr Limpet)

This is good stuff. BTW I do not have the hot foot so I'm still using the production cables if that makes a difference. I will pull on the cables and see how much slack there is . My next question is:
Which motor mount holes do you guys recommend when I mount the motor to the plate. The motor is a Johnson 150 - 2000 year.

I can't wait to get this done so the chine walking issues will be reduced. It get really scary if I'm not paying attention and it goes too far.

Set your plate to the middle height and install the motor on the holes third from the top. With a 6" plate you should have plenty of steering cable as well as control cable. Just watch your bend in the cables where they exit the splash well you don't want too much of a radius bend. It is best to install the cables while the motor is off.

Re: Adding a jack plate to a 2000 Renegade 18 - question (ChampioNman)

I have my motor 8.5 inches back. 6 is no problem, but 8.5 made the steering more difficult. I am probably going to pull my 2.5 in spacers out and just put a 1 inch in their place and call it good.
