    System Check Gauge

    Im wondering if its worth it to install a System Check Gauge, I assume that the buzzer still functions without the gauge installed, it does beep when you turn the key on. I really cant remember what beep denotes what fault so I couldn't tell if I would hear an overheat or a low oil alarm.... Also did my motor come with this feature I think it did... 2001 Johnson 225h.o. It has never had a gauge on it... I gues because of astetice reasons....

    I would get one because it tells you at a glance what the issue is. Some require more immediate attention. Like no oil.

    The application requires a system check gauge and the proper horn that is used with system check.
    The horn is designed to self-test when the key is turned on and then give an audible alarm when a caution or warning condition exists with the engine.
    The engine sends a signal to the system check gauge which provides a visual lighted indication of the issue. The gauge contains the logic to activate the horn and the horn sounds for ten seconds no matter the issue. The lighted visual indicator will continue to be lit and the engine rpm may be reduced until the issue is resolved.
    You can purchase a tachometer with the 4 system check lights @ the bottom of the gauge & you won't have to add an additional 2" gauge to your dash.

    All I know is there is nothing like trucking WFO at a tourney blast off, and just ednging someone out, and have that freaking horn go off.

    Man I hate getting beat to my spot.

    Do you already have a tach?
    I assume you do but your tach does not have system check, correct?

    I looked hanging upside down under the console till my head nearly exploded and the only 8pin rectangleular plug I found was pluged into a plastic box under the dash that said OMC on it. The box was probably 1/2in thick by 4x4 give or take..... No other marking on the box I saw... and that was the only plug coming in or going out....

    That is the 8 pin connector you are looking for! It plugs into the System Check Gage or the tac with System Check on it. Not sure what the box is.

    Heck if I know either... I think its what folks have refered to as the little black box... rather than a visual with buzzer its make a paterend buzz to identify the prob... heck Idont know though.... part number 176736 but can reference it anywhere

    That is a "Horn Driver Module"...

    It is listed in the BRP Online Parts Catalog under Accessories / 2001-2004 / Electrical System (misc) / Horn Driver Module.

    Apparently whoever rigged this boat up decided to use this module instead of the normal horn.

    That 8 pin connector is the one used to plug into a System Check Tachometer or a System Check Gauge.

    You would need to get a regular horn and use the regular 2 prong plug that is already part of your wiring harness to hook up the warning horn.

    Maybe some of the Guru's here can shed some more light on the Horn Driver Module and why it was used and/or any advantages or disadvantages to using it.

    I have the 2 wire horn hooked up now Joe but wanted the gauge for easy identify... but not sure if I gan just swap the gauge in instead of the box and all will work right without the box or what

    I believe the "box" is no longer available, it was a stop gap measure in the early System Check years until the gauges were plentiful.

    Unplug the box and plug in a new System Check tachometer and you will be good to go. Each time you turn the key on you should hear a beep and watch the 4 flashing warning lights turn on and off as a self-check.

    Thanks for the info, Fred has a gauge Im going to buy off of him soon... Im not going to run the systemcheck tach since I have the BeeDee gauges Im gonna use the 4-light 2 1/2in gauge that Fred has..... That will work the same as the tach right.... just without the tachometer part.....

    Seahorse,

    That makes sense now.

    If that 8 pin connector was NOT connected to anything, the warning horn would not work.
    In order for the warning horn to work the 8 pin connector must be connected to either:
    1. System Check Tachometer
    2. System Check Gauge
    3. Horn Driver Module

    As you know, PIN #8 of that 8 pin connector provides a signal to the warning horn.

    Again, if that connector is NOT connected to anything, the warning horn cannot work because the warning horn cannot get a signal.

    I purchased a used harness a couple of years ago just for the Deutsch connectors.
    I took the harness apart just to see how the wires were connected together and what wires went where.

    I have never seen one of these Horn Driver Modules installed in any boat because all of the boats had either the System Check Tachometer or the System Check Gauge.

    Seems like this case is solved.

    Then we can assume you do NOT have a System Check Tachometer nor a System Check Gauge.
    Is that correct?

    Just out of curiosity, why not?

    1. Don't like them?
    2. Don't need one?
    3. Don't want to drill another hole for another gauge?
    4. Personal preference?
    5. Something else to go wrong?

    Again, just curious.

    I was referring to the 2-1/2" system check gauge. I have that instead of the system check tach!!
