Wow. is it a 201 pro? My 89 201 is 20'3", and according to Nada weighs 1400 lbs. add 3 batteried, TM, 2nd prop, tools, and tx load, plus engine weight you are looking at close ot 2000lbs worth of boat to push. I cant believe you got a 150 on that. I have a 225 limited edition Johnson on it and by myself, I get 68 out of it with 6" JP, 4 blade 13 3/4 x 27p prop. These old stratos' are heavy boats.

yes im sure it is a 201 pro and yup she is a dog.ive never been into speed that much and running a smaller prop with a load like 3 or 4 people it worked out fine at a speed of about 40 to 45. but like all bassnfools i now feel the need for speed lol.but doing so on a very small pocket book. have a friend that has an older black max 200 with a jack plate on a cajun 20ft and i can get it for cheap i think it is about an 89 model.was hopeing to push this old barge up to around 65 which is nothing to the new boats and bigger motors.just wondering if anyone had used this combo and if it would be possible for it to run in the 60's with it. also have a guy who will build me a 200 johnson gt and swears it will get in 65mph plus when running really light. but he is also gonna get some good dollars for the build.the johnson is a 91 that he is building. thanks for responding.larry

Larry, From what I have read and learned here, switching from teh rude to the merc will require new wiring harness and controls etc...Mods will have more info on that switch. You might want to ask on both the merc and johnson forums too. they will let you know the diffs. I have had mine for about 3 months and love this boat. HIt 68 the other day with me and 2 yr old with about 15 gallons fuel on board. this sumer I ran 65 all day long with partner and tx load. it was HOT here too. I have always owned a johnson, and have had very good luck with them. the 200 gt is good strong motor from what I have heard, but also a gas hog. I have no clue my mpg, but it is somewhere in the 3 mpg range. I came from a 15' astroglass with a 85 johnson. toped out at 30!

Hey Larry, my 89 201 Pro dual console with a 92 200 Johnson runs 60 mph, full gas tanks, tournment load and me. Not fast compared to newer boats, but plenty fast enough for me, cant beat the ride either. Brian Penrod

I did mine on a tight budget also, bought the boat and trailer, then the 200 Johnson, then a Minn Kota Maxum Pro 80 and three batteries. I've still only got 3500 dollars in everything, and its also in great shape. Take your time and look for good deals, they are out there. Brian Penrod

    Re: 89 stratos w/200merc? (BPenrod)

first let me thank all for the respones. my 201 was used to haul a lot of people like 4 fishermen plus me and it was rigged with the 150 from git go.other then speed it does really well with the load that it has carried.pops right out of the hole and goes on ,just not going on fast lol. i know it is big and heavy but im reaching for 60 to 65 and i think these motors that ive mentioned will do it.just was hopeing to hear from others with the same range of boat and motor.also what props you are running. thinking the black max 200 with jack plate will get it up and keep it moving well. the johnson is much more expensive for me to get.the merc has all controls and cables with it.actualy it is on a cajun 20ft'r now but is not ready for water to test it as the new cables are not installed yet.i like my boat and just want the motor and controls so if i get that one ill have a cajun for sale motorless or with my old 150 on it . all responses are apreciated guys an gals if any are reading this. i really am on a tight budget on this and can do all of it myself as to the changing. just wanting to get the right stuff so i dont have to do it but once. thanks again

If the rude is still available, get it. The mercury is most likely a 2.4 liter and the rude is 3.0 liter. More displacement will have more torque.

Re: 89 stratos w/200merc? (Th' Ragin Cajun)

Larry I think the 200 Merc. would do just fine. I dont have much experience with them. I think a lot of the old 201's came with 150's, I think you will be happy with the 200. My 89 201 with the 200 Johnson does a good job for me, probably wouldnt be good enough for others. It is set at 3 and a half inches below the pad, and has a 24 ProTestor on it. Brian
