I have one of these in the boat and have seen several pros using them as well. I noticed in this past week's BASSMASTER coverage that Dean Rojas had one in his Skeeter also.

On my 2008 ZX, I can put my pliers outside the rim of the storage compartment and the lid will still close.
Another thing you might try is one of those magnetic strips like people use to hold tools on the wall.
