    Special Tools for Powerhead Rebuild

Hey guys. #2 on my '93 Johnson 40HP is scored and the powerhead needs to be rebuilt. I am an accomplished enough mechanic, but have some questions as I have never worked on a marine engine before. Anyway,

I just got my OEM manual and was studying for the rebuild. It mentions the following "special" tools:

OMC Puller Bridge and OMC Small Puller (to remove lower crankcase seals)
OMC Cone and OMC Driver (for wrist pin)
OMC Rod Cap Alignment Fixture (for rod bolts)

Are these critical must-have tools? If so, it takes it out of my shop and forces me to take it in.

Oh, and is the following OMC OEM products recommended or are there suitable (and local) replacements?

    OMC Locquic Primer
    Gel-Seal II
    OMC Triple-Guard Grease
    OMC Gasket Sealing Compound

    Thanks in advance!

Re: Special Tools for Powerhead Rebuild (mbolton)

If you can rebuild car motors, than you should have the tools in your shop to rebuild you 40 hp. You will need the Gel-seal to put the block halves back together. A ring compresser tool and I use a puller from sears to remove the fly wheel. Just follow the book and you should be ok. There are many great folks that will help you on this board should you have questions. Just ask. Remember to post your model and seriel number of you motor so you get the exact answer. Good luck..
