    Help Help Help

Boating this past weekend i ended up with a crab pot line wrapped around the prop as well as the prop shaft , in doing so ruined my shaft seal . I have a 1998 225 Johnson model number J225STLECS . My question is in removing the seal i found 2 seals on the shaft after looking at some diagrams I only see one seal on the prop shaft and they are only sold one per pack. Ive watched a ton of videos all say they have 2 seals , yesterday i stopped at a marina and was told that the new seals are double seals and only one is required . My lower unit was just rebuilt at another marina a month ago which put 2 double seals in after mentioning this to the marina yesterday he told me the other mechanic did not rebuild it right , which wouldnt of surprised me being they had the wrong lower unit grease in it.

Question two i can not find the spacer plate behind the prop that stops the exhaust from flowing over the prop they are not found on any parts diagram anywhere , are they something that has to be ordered from the prop manufacturer or a web site they can be found on?

    Thanks for any help.

You can install either the double seal one piece part or the two individual seals in the bearing carrier. It is based on model year of the motor that the parts are ordered against. The propshaft has been the same since 1993. If there was wear on your propshaft the mechanic probably installed the two individual seals to get past the wear marks. They are installed back to back. How do you know they had the wrong "lower unit grease" in it? It is actually lower unit fluid. The recommended fluid for your lower unit is BRP HPF-Pro. But Mercury Hi-Performace fluid, Amsoil or even Royal Purple is OK to use. If you are running a 4 blade prop then you need the diffuser or more commonly known as a weed ring is available and is listed in Evinrudes Prop book or the accessories catalog. You can get that part from any of the online parts houses.

Watery would be from the crab trap. Black would be from heat. Merc's fluid is blueish/green. BRP's is a honey color. Don't use HI-VIS not for your motor/case.
Part number for your weed ring is 126669.

Thanks for the part number not sure if the gear oil is hi vis that i put in its johnson looks like a honey color , im assiumimg the oil that came out was mercury . It was a blueish color . I believe i have the magnum lower end ? I know its been updated . Would mercury lower unit oil be better to use then the johnson ? I figured johnson would go with johnson .
