    coosa vs cobra

I would like to know what the difference between the coosa and the regular boat. Or if there is any. I have a Friend that has a 1999 cobra and I love that boat the way it rides and fishes. I currently run a Champion and would love to find a cobra to put my motor on. Does anybody know how the cobra runs with a 250xs on there boat with a gps reading thanks.

I'm sure that Backlash will reply to you soon enough, but he had a 250 on his Cobra and I believe that he said that it ran 83. That'll make your eyes water.

    Re: coosa vs cobra (mwilliams)

Mike...the basic difference between a "Coosa" and a "regular" Cobra is that the Coosa was built with no wood...all composite construction which made them a little lighter. All were built with AME 5000 resin. That is not to say that boats built with wood that is encapsulated with fiberglass aren't any good. Many boats today are still built that way, transom, stringers, etc. After the initial construction of the Coosa 216, Cobra also made the 201 available in an all composite construction at an additional cost. I believe the first year for the Cobra 201 composite was 2002.

I ran a 250HP Yamaha on my "regular" 201D Cobra and the best I ever got was 82.3mph (GPS) at 5500 rpm's (which was Yamaha's recommended rpm setting at WOT). That EFI engine was a very strong runner and had a few more rpm's to turn if I wanted to play around with it but that was more than plenty fast for me. Please keep in mind that was not with a tourney load. Just me in the boat, about a 1/4 tank of gas, empty livewells, and empty storage boxes. This speed was reached under ideal conditions in the early Spring of the year with cool water and air temps and with a slight ripple on the water.

I thought I would be on Easy Street by now but somehow I missed the off ramp!

    Re: coosa vs cobra

Here's a bit of Cobra history trivia on this subject. Viper actually built some composite boats as far back as 1998. An individual could get one if they knew Charles, because they were "experimental" back then. I have a 99 201D and it was the first one out (built in 98). It is approximately 200lbs lighter than the "wood" boat, the nose lifts quite easily and requires some skill at WOT. Took me awhile to get used to when I first got it after running the standard boat.

In 2001, when they debuted the 216 Coosa, they did not use AME5000 for resin. They used the same resin Tritons are built with....Coosa composite. They explained to me that the Coosa resin was more flexible and a little softer than the AME5000. However, it did not take them very long (a few months) to go back to the AME5000. Additionally, I do not know for sure but I believe it became a Cobra Coosa because of the switch to the Coosa product.

Just a piece of Cobra trivia. And by the way, it is pretty neat to see that there are 3 new Cobras running around here on Oklahoma lakes these days. I certainly understand Tx201's frustration as I have been wanting to buy a new boat but have not been able to make myself switch to another brand since I have been with them back to 1995. Still love the boat!!!!

    Re: coosa vs cobra (mwilliams)

thanks guys that is good to know. I looked at legends and I like the way that they look and when I fished with my friend that has a cobra I loved it. To me the cobra and the legend are the same. I have never fished in a legend but I like the way the cobra doesn't role like the champion does. I like the champ but just can't live with the stability of the boat. snakebite still interested in how much you want for your boat may be a player or you could use a good champ maybe. :

    ASKING 16500 FOR EVERYTHING!
don't know what engine alone is worth,so would have to figure that out to get a price for just the boat.

    what Champ do you have?
