I fished dedicated +/- wires back to the battery on my 1996 model in order to ensure 100% clean connections.... You can probably jump off of any of the red accessory switches or main power switch and find a clean ground, to the HDS-8, but I would recommend running dedicated +/- to the battery... Less chance of interference etc....

For the LSS-1, you can connect the yellow wire directly to the yellow HDS wire. This will power the LSS-1 on and off through the HDS-8 - *Or* it can be switched directly to its own power source which is what I did...

I wanted to run the power cable directly to battery but the cable given with unit isnt long enough, did you have to buy additional wiring?

Yep - just get mid-heavy guage automotive wire and use the water proof fuse holders in a place you can get to them easily.... Also use marine heat shrink type wire connectors at any splice or at the battery....

what is the best way to run t he wires down, i looked down and it looked like a tight fit down the side where all the wires run already?

Go to the hardware store or Home Depot/Lowes etc. and buy a small wire snake used to feed wire down/up walls. I use electrical tape and tape the pos./neg. wire to the end of the wire snake and feed them back.

Same here -- it can be a challenge if it gets hung up in some existing wiring/cables... If so, don't force it just pull back and slide it in again.... Some people run an extra string or cord at the same time and just leave it laying in there (tied off) for the next time you need to pull some wire/cables etc... I think the factory even does that on newer boats...

I appreciate all the help guys, you are awesome. One more question do you know exactly what gauge wire you used when you connected the two.. the + and - cables from hds are so small.

I use 16-18 ga. be sure and wire your inline fuse on the power side when your hooking it up. I like to solder and heat shrink my connections but, it is not a must.
If you use the old twist and tape process get some good 3M electrical tape.
