Evinrude 75 HP OB - Shift Problem - Forward is Backwards and vice versa

Put a new lower unit on my 1983 Evinrude 75 hp outboard. Ended up having to take apart the throttle/shift box to fix the warm up throttle slide. Everything went topsy tervy....When I put the shifter in reverse position, the propeller rotates in the forward position. When I put it in the forward position, the propeller rotates in a reverse order. Could I have messed this up by working inside the control unit *throttle/shifter"???

Was the gearcase from a '73 thru '77 engine?

If so, we just had a post like this a few weeks ago. Those early gearcases were hydraulically assisted shifted and they had the opposite shift travel than the '78 and later mechanical only gearcases.

Oh boy! I do believe that is correct.....I just remember that it was an older model engine than mine that it came off of.....All I asked the guy was would it fit my 75 hp and, of course, he said yes.
