Johnson 225 HO --- Lower Unt fried? Check out pics below

    Good Day,

I have a 2001 Johnson 225HO (J225HPLSIF) which was runing decently, but not as good as normal. It had a very minor miss and appeared to be somewhat more of a GAS hog than normal.

I decarbed and it became worse. Per recommendations on the board, I changed the spark plugs and corrected the alignment of the schraeder valve (now in line with the body of the solenoid).

After changing the plugs I took it to the water. I was also trying a new prop at the same time. It seemed to be running fine with the 26p Raker II, great lift, etc. Engine sounded differently than it does with my Renegade, but I thought it was just because of the new prop. Anyway, it only got up to 5500rpm and 68mph. I thought it was just not a good running prop. This weekend I went to run it again and things started to go downhill. Boat got on plane but when I went to throttle up, it only got to about 5200 RPM. It then began to rattle, so I slowed down. I let it idle for a minute and all seemed to be fine. Went to get back on top and the rattle returned. Once again, idling was fine.

I idled back to the landing not wanting to cause any troubles. No alarms or lights. I got back home and check compression, all about 105-110lbs. Spark was there too. Check while running and removing plug wire. Each time I removed one, it appeared to make a difference.

    Any ideas????

    Thanks,
    Dan

Put the gade back on and check the LU Fluid. then retest. Don't try and introduce a variable when testing.

    Good Afternoon,

As advised, I checked the lower unit. It appears that is an excessive amount of shavings on the metallic plugs. Both the top and bottom plugs were full of the metallic shavings....fine slices and sprinkles it would appear.

For more info, model is J225HPLSIF and my SERIAL # is Q04874994

I drained all the lube and put in some new lube. Should I even consider running it or are the gears fried with that level of shavings?

    Thanks,
    BassCatDan

It looks like you may have the same issue that I just went through. I ran around KY Lake stopping and starting because of a rattle that was not normal. I checked the powerhead and the prop. After I pulled the prop and reinstalled it, the rattle was gone, until the next trip out. Then the lower unit ruptured at 70 mph down the lake. The pinion bearing/gear (don't know what they call it) came through the side of the casing at the propshaft level. You better get it replaced, because that was not fun.

Shavings are ok but chunks or slices are bad, I would have it looked at before you run it again.
