NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The U.S. Postal Service more than doubled its losses in fiscal year 2010, despite cutting billions of dollars in expenses and trimming its staff.

The Postal Service said its net loss totaled $8.5 billion in the fiscal year that ended Sept. 30. That compares to a loss of $3.8 billion the prior year.

Re: Fed ex fuel surcharge!!! (Clif Kincaid)

at 8 bucks a pop (address) these guys are racking some serious coin..

I have called a few companies on their "surcharges" for fuel and have yet had one prove to me the "added" cost because of the fuel prices. every one so far has dropped the charge and i havent lost one yet. i have explained that i understand and wouldnt mind additional cost but their costs are way too high per address and we are not paying for their fuel when it was already included in their charges. now a percentage added to the cost could be doable but a flat rate per drop is not.

And there's the rub. You cannot run it as you would a typical business. The Postal Service is mandated to provide universal service to every address in the United States. If it was your everyday business you would either raise the price or discontinue service to areas that were not profitable. That means if you have a Grandma that lives ten miles down a dirt road you would have to pay a lot more than 45 cents to send her a birthday card, that is if a private company would even go there at all. Case in point, the Postal Service delivers what is called the "last mile", making the actual delivery to many addresses that Fedex and UPS won't because they find it too unprofitable. I'm sure some private enterprise may get some aspects of it done faster, but at what cost?

Be careful what you wish for, you just may get it.</td></tr></table>

They be mandated but the do not do it. I live 1/4 mile from my PO. They do not deliver to my house. I have to pay for a PO box. Or I need to go to the counter during business hours.

seriously? this is your attempt of a civil thread reply? when you drop a letter or pkg off at your local USPS in NC, and it's destination is Mich...and it goes to FLA, then TN, then St Louis.....then you might have a logistics problem.

Unless you actually work there, you don't a clue to what goes on. Sorry, but what you probably think, is not even close. NO other business is the country has to pay over 5 billion per year to fund retirement for workers that aren't even born yet. Of course, don't let facts cloud the perception. In the first fiscal quarter of the 2012 year, the USPS made a profit of 200 MILLION dollars. Then factor in the payment they are mandated to make, and they lost over 3 billion. Want to make it work, remove the law passed in the lame duck congress in 2006.

If your not in the trucking business, or shipping business---Like he said, be careful for what you wish. BEFORE 1977 freight companies HAD to run designated routes. Deregulation came and guess what?---You want to ship a 300 lb. box by ground freight, and you live 80 miles outside the terminal city-----------that trucking company has no other freight going your way, here's your choices---bring it to the terminal (something that could NEVER be done before deregulation) OR yea, we will pick up your box ( with extra $$$ and fuel surcharge). USPS, next time you want to ship that outboard, 8x20 roll of carpet for your boat--give the USPS a call.
Opps, I forgot to add-----&gt; ---someone will think I was serious about shipping an OB by USPS.
