    Old Evinrude/Johnson

Going to look at an old boat that I could get real cheap (not a bassboat, its a big cuddy cabin). Its supposed to have a V4 Johnnyrude. What are some signs to look for. The guy doesn't know much about boats, but the flywheel turns and the prop turns, so it's not seized up. Anything else to look for. I'll try and get a serial number to see if anyone can find anything out about it.

Being a V4, that means it is newer than a 1957 engine. Try to get the complete model number, the serial number doesn't help us.

Ok then, I'll get the model number. I think that its a late 70's early 80's but could be anything. Have to wait till I see it. Probably turn out to be a Merc.

Flathead it sounds like you may be looking at a boat with a v4. I dont have it anymore, but my son has it. He grew up around a 1982 17' Kingfisher with a 115 Evinrude on it. You know how parents are. You give your kids the old stuff, when you upgrade. Anyhow the old motor runs like a top. About 8 years ago, I had to do an overhaul on it, due to what I suspect, that water got in fuel and damage lower 2 pistons. When I baught it seemed to run good, of coarce this was my first big motor. After the overhaul, the motor runs better than before. The old Kingfisher isn't the lightest thing, but the old 115 will get it on step fast with a 19" pitch stainless steel prop. I would run the motor or even have a tech check it. It's an old motor but may well have alot of good years left in it.

I'm not gonna have a tech check it, if it runs it runs if it don't it don't. It on a 25ft or bigger aluminum cuddy cabin with a trailer that I can probably get for 500. Just hope its as bulletproof as my 2000.
