    lower unit oil change

I changed the lower unit oil on the 01 250 fichts saturday. The sb oil came out a med/dark green with no smell. The port oil came out a dark green/brown color that smells burnt. There were almost identical amounts of oil in both units.I replaced it with the evinrude synthetic lu oil that I was planning on running next week in florida and then changing it out again to flush the lu when we get back..The boat has been used twice over the last 6 months. What might cause this and do I need to have someone look at it?Thanks

Re: lower unit oil change (whitecap)

As long as you observe no "milky color" or streaking in the oil that comes out, you don't have water intrusion and should be ok to proceed with your plan to run it, and change it again in a week or two.

The burnt oil is an indicator that you need to increase the frequency of the gearlube service in your motors. If possible, have a shop pressure/vaccuum test the gearcases for you before your trip. It could be a big money saving action on your part.
