    Chine walking!!!!!

How in the world do I get my boat to stop chine walking so I can open it up?I have a basscat cougar with a 225 Honda 4-stroke. The motor is great I have 6 props that I have tried and the only one that will run the right rpm's is a 27p tempest plus. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Drive it. Stay with it as long as you can and shut er down when it gets CRAZY!
Launch again, and do the same.
Just keep at it. Sooner or later it will "come to you". Like learning to ride a bicycle...Once you get it, you got it.

You don't stop it, you don't drive thru it. You simply learn to drive it and control it.

"If it ain't wigglin', it ain't running rite!"

    Re: Chine walking!!!!! (SkeeterDD22)

LOTS of info on this over in the novice boaters forum, but this video is what helped me the most.

    http://s88.photobucket.com/alb...2.flv

One thing to remember is it is alot like riding a bike in the sense that you are balancing the boat on a narrow pad. I thnk like this and if I feel the boat falling off the pad to the right, then I make a small quick turn of the wheel to the right to keep it from falling that way. If you make too big of a correction the it will try to fall off to the left so these are not big movements of the wheel just small quick jerks. One other thing to look at is how is you load distributed in the boat. If I have a partner that has been to the buffet too many time then mine is worse at chinwalking than it is if I have somebody my size or smaller. Try to balance you load from side to side and it will help some with chinwalking. Hope this helps.

Each brand boat handles differently. You will just need more seat time driving the boat up to the chine walk. BassCat has a good bit of info for your Cougar. Here is one link, out of a couple .........

Thank you all! I have had the boat for 3 years and recently made some "Improvements" to the motor. A heck of a lot more power. Now it sounds like I get to learn all over again! Thanks again!

    Re: Chine walking!!!!! (Skeeterman1)

I would (almost) rather stay at home than run a skeeter. When I was 10 I was on lake columbia in magnolia and a new skeeter centered a stump. The boat broke IN HALF!!! I know a lot of guys who wouldn't run anything other than a skeeter they are just not for me!

Lots of times if your motor is to deep it will make it worse about walking.Be sure you have the motor set properly with each prop, and you may find a cure for a lot of it,but you will still have a little walking that you will have to learn to drive. My old Pantera walked a little, but was easy to drive.

    Re: Chine walking!!!!! (wildkat7)

If you are ever up around jonesboro i can teach you to drive it. Remember, take small steps: get the boat just fast enough to where it starts to chine then learn to balance it with left turn tiny wheel jerks, then when you can drive it at that speed give it some more throttle and learn again. if you let the boat get wild and rocking then it is to late. The key to driving a boat isn't driving through or with the chine, it is keeping chine from happening to begin with. Good luck and be safe!

That's probably not much to do with the manufacturer.
I've got a Cat in the shop right now. Hit a floater. We are trying to decide what to do about the transom...OUCH.

Friend of mine has a Champion. Two years ago he hit a stump, broke the lower unit, broke the motor exhaust housing. Almost "lost" the whole lower unit. Didn't hurt the boat at all. We fixed it.
Last week he hit another one. Didn't hurt the motor at all. Shattered his transom though.

Just different impacts cause different damage.
