    Need a Yamaha tech

Problems with lower unit on a vz. Could the failure of the lower unit be caused by a misalinement of the drive shaft on the upper end? Could it cause enough vibration to cause the upper roller bearing to wear flat and to cause the gears to crack and chip?

I'm no expert but how could it? The shafts are round and splined to fit together right so how could they be off

Have you looked at the parts diagram on the connection?

The best that I could. But I'm not sure what else could be causing these problems. No prop shaft damage, no prop damage. Gears cracked with missing teeth and a upper roller bearing that is flat on one side.

Any signs of heat build up from lack of lube?

How is the bushing up in the mid section where the shaft goes through when re fitting the LU

That kind of wobble in the shaft would also show up at the water pump couldnt it?

Highly unlikely unless the crankshaft bearings in the engine are shot, and you would feel that for sure and the engine would not run much longer. If you lost the upper bearing, below the water pump, that would most likely be the cause of gear failure. The real question is why did that upper bearing fail. Was there water in the gear lube?

That is what is difficult about this failure. There wasn't any water in the lower unit and it was full of oil. I use Royal Purple as it is some of the best.

Just curious how old was the oil? Did this happen while running or putting it into gear?

The lower unit had less than 25 hours on it. They oil had been changed after the 10 hour break in period. I always have changed the oil 3 times a year. I had run to maybe 20-30 different spots during the day and it failed as I reached the ramp to put it on the trailer. It wouldn't go into reverse, then it wouldn't go into forward.
The only really weird thing was, when the tech went to do the tear down for the inspection he claimed there was so much presure in it that it blew the screwdriver out of his hands. It also sprayed him with oil. The one think about Royal Purple, is the smell. He had to throw his shirt away.

So is it under warranty? When you put your rig in gear do you thump it in or slowly click....click....click untill it's in gear?

The last stop before going back to the ramp there were no indications of a problem. Only when I beached the boat and backed the trailer in did I notice something was wrong. I would no go into reverse. So I used tm to back up. Then I tried to drive onto the trailer and it would not go into forward. The shifter was just sort of stuck, stiff. No thump or click.

What I mean is during normal shifting do you slowly put it in gear letting it go click...cick....click untill it's in gear or just thump it's in gear?
