    Louisiana Vacation

Posted this in the lounge and didn't think to post here until someone suggested it. We are thinking about going to Baton Rouge area for vacation in a couple of weeks. Can anyone give me some ideas of things to do there? We want to enjoy some good Cajun food and music so any local restaurant recommendations. Also would like to do an air boat ride or swamp tour. So, anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance for any help.

Wait till late september and come watch an LSU game! Thats a good time! other wise, look up The BASIN LANDING off of I-10 West of baton rouge in henderson swamp, they do air boat rides and also have house boats for rent. good bass fishing with guides available, Quantity over quality though!

If you want TRUE Cajun, you'll have to make the trip to Lafayette or Houma/ Thibodaux area.

If you want the Cajun experience you need to go to Lafayette or Houma. I would go to Houma. They have a military museum, a heritage museum that has focuses on decoy carving and quilt making, a waterlife museum that shows the history of shrimping and fishing. There are airboat tours at Bayou Black Marina at in Des Allemands. You can go fishing, both freshwater and saltwater, I can bring you. You are within a couple of hours of some of the nicest antibellum homes. Thibodaux has a national park that shows the indian history in the area. Should I go on or do you get the idea that I like Houma and Thibodaux.

Check out the old homes along the Mississippi and Bayou Lafourche. Houmas House, Nottoway, Oak Alley to name a few. While you are out eat some good seafood at a couple of hole in the wall restaruants, Hymel's on the river road in Convent, and Hilltop Inn on the Diversion Canal. You may also want to check out The Grapevine in Donaldsonville. These are all different than what you are used to. Try to schedule a boat tour of the Atchafalaya Basin. Take a ride to New Orleans and check out the D-Day museum, its worth the ride.

    Re: Louisiana Vacation (Groman)

The last time we were in B.R. we ate at a place called Paran's (not sure on spelling). We ate the fish (like the thin filets) and shrimp and it was really good and reasonable. Most places down there know how to cook seafood. But I will 2nd the Hymel's on the River Road. I worked down there for a while over 30 years ago and it was good then and people tell me it is still great and not that far from B.R. Hope you enjoy your trip down here. These S. LA. guys can hook you up no doubt.

Thanks for the help everyone. It will be me, my wife and my daughter who is 23. I asked them again last night what they wanted to do and the only thing they want is good food and swamp tours. Makes it hard to plan if they have no other ideas but i guess i should feel lucky, no shopping or malls!
