    97 200 vindicator - lower unit seal problem - any ideas ?

I have taken this to the same mechanic 3 times and the lower unit is still leaking water in to the oil.... how hard is it to seal this unit ?

    I am totally frustrated !!

He states all driveshafts are straight, smooth etc and he has replaced every seal in the lower unit .... any tips ??

Has he checked the case to make sure that it is ok? They make a tool to check alignment in it... Plus you might get them to pressure check it... I believe it needs to hold 15 lbs. pressure.... He just might be missing something...

Yeah he says he has checked the case... and pressure tested it 3 times, but for some reason it still leaks....... I guess I will take it to a diff mechanic and start all over again !

I think he said a seal that goes around the drive shaft, but under the water pump area, but I may be mistaken........ I have a diagram, but not I cannot find it.... the time before last, oil started leaking out the weep hole on the lower unit, which had never happend before....

uh oh , what do you mean by WEEP HOLE....
you mean the pitot hole in the front of the lower unit that picks up the pressure to the speedo tube?? if so you may have found the leak , which could not be stopped by replacing seals. still seems strange how it would check pressure but not water. may be such a hairline crack that it only expands to open up when it gets warm..

yeah--what weep hole?? i have the same motor--no weep hole. the hole in the front is the pitot tube and sends the pressure signal to the speedometer. i have heard of guys using a drill bit to clean them out--DONT DO IT!! a saftey pin kept in the glove box is all you need to clean them out.

    please explain "weep hole"

Your '97 engine originally had a 1 piece double lipped seal in the d'shaft bearing housing. You cannot put 2 back to back seals in it like earlier and later motors have.

Your best bet is to replace the bearing housing assy. for about $75 and that includes a new seal assembly.

The one-piece seals were a problem and were only used for a few years. Also the upper bearing assembly wears quickly when water is in the oil. It is best to replace it. Don't forget that it can hold pressure and vacuum yet when running, the "sloppy bearing" can allow water in and oil out because the driveshaft is whipping around .

Don't forget to change the shift bushing o-rings and make sure there are no knicks or worn areas on the shift shaft. Make sure there are no "seal grooves" worn into the driveshaft.
