    225 hpdi hard starting

Have a new 08 225 HPDI my first Yamaha have owned several Mercs so this is a new beast for me, my problem is cranking after it has been run fish for a hour or two try to start it might crank usually won't check bulb it's soft pump it up firm still won't crank,so fish some more won't crank buy this time i'm getting pissed so i push the fast idle w/o and kee-p turning till it finally hits then runs real rough and smell of gas. This engine has only about 30 hrs and has been in shop twice for this issue and to replace a water sensor so i had a fuel /water filter installed then and the plugs replaced then also.I don't understand why i have to pump bulb up every time i sit for any length of time .This keeps happening its getting old you would think with fuel injection it would crank easy. I just replaced all filters and plugs again today ran fine started fine but did'nt have but about hour to fish so really don't know, also when i 'm trying to start it and it won't crank it never hits one time this seams strange to me.I have been using a fuel additive and ringfree cents day one, also i still don't like the way the bulb feels when you pump it up you kinda have to half pump it if you know what i mean?replace it next ? then replace motor? help needed thanks.

Re: 225 hpdi hard starting (pearidge)

Had mine ( 06 250 hpdi ) in the shop last week for similar issue, hard to start when cold. The mechanic did a "sync and link" and so far it appears to have fixed the issue. The symptoms you described sound exactly like what I was going through.

with it being a new motor,i would go ahead and bring it in and let them figure it out.On the primer bulb if you can place it where the arrow on the bulb stays in the up position then pump a few times and it should stay tight. The check valves in the primer blub will not work as good if laying down or pointed down.but you should not have to pump it everytime you start so bring it in.

Make sure you have the right size battery for this engine. It is very important that you have a high amperage cranking battery for this engine, the problem will tend to come and go till you burn the powerhead. Yamaha needs the amperage for it's computor. Get with the dealer and they will instruct you from here. Also change this battery every two years, trust me!

Well took back to dealer hooked it up to computer said it had a low idle setting was on 1.9 neeeded to be on or around 2.5 ? I guess well see as for the battery issue you might be right over winter the delco battery that came with boat went bad so dealer swapped for same about 2 mounths ago. The Graph cutting off when cranking is your battery. I had the SAME problem and asked about it on the board and got plenty of answers. My graph had started cutting off when I would bump the key and I got to thinking that it was the 4th time out without charging the batteries, so I charged them up for a night and never had the problem again.
