I ran mine for years with 14-16 no problems.
Mike, if you start to see psi dropping below 12 I would look for possible problems. Same goes for over 25psi. Anything in between is good. Water psi is measured before thermostats and the poppet valve acts like a pressure regulator. Water pick up ventilation, bad impeller, weak or too stiff poppet valve spring, bebries or corrosion will have an affect on psi. In my experience the biggest problems are tiny rock pebbles getting stuck in the poppet valve which prevent complete seal and there for lose in psi. Weeds or other material that can float will most likely get washed out. If you are planning on raising your motor I would recommend plugging or masking the top ¼ portion of your water pick up screens. This will still maintain your psi and prevent air going through your engine which can be catastrophic.
