    Trouble for HPDI motors

I'm a first time Yamaha owner 3.3 liter 200 hp, have had black motors for the previous 30 years. Just got through a month wait to get a new power head on my one year old motor. found out there is a major problem with the oil injector pump on a lot of HPDI motors. Yamaha has just issued a TSB on this, and will replace parts on all suspect motors regardless of warranty. Yamaha in Atlanta (Mark) said they are not notifying customers (even though there are thousands), so you have to wait until the motor blows up to find out you have one with the problem. I've had many issues with my motor beside the power head failure, maybe it was just a "Monday" built unit. Also, I sure wish there was a more responsive, competent dealership to work with in my area (suburb of Detroit).

    Welcome to the BBC.
I haven't heard of this problem? Sorry you have had trouble with your engine, and I sure hope they have it straightened out for you. I will ask my dealer if they have heard anything about this too.

My motor has a manufacture date of December/2005, and a service date of June/2006, I took good care of it (Yamalube 2 and Seafoam), and did not run it very hard, its on a Ranger 519 VX, which is not a speedy hull.

That sucks man...I have a 04 225 HPDI run seafoam and yamalube in her and run her hard to 6k all the time...no issues....152 hours so far...if she blew up tommorrow I would still be happy with her performance, considering the way I drive her....

Re: Trouble for HPDI motors (chevy II)

My dealer replaced my oil pump last week while the motor was in for it's 10hr service. I would recomend anybody running an hpdi motor to inquire about this at thier dealer. I didn't know about the TSB prior to this.

I wonder if this is the reason my motor blew, know one has really told me the reason for it blowing a piston. My engine is a 2001 175 HPDI with 120hrs. How would I find out about this problem and be able to prove it?

Re: Trouble for HPDI motors (eal4500)

When mine blew they changed an injector....wonder if that's connected? I never got a good answer as to WHY it blew. It only had 50 hours on it the first summer, and blew on the 2nd trip of the 2nd season.

Now it seems to be running strong, though I am only slightly out of the break-in period. I sure hope it holds together this time.

Re: Trouble for HPDI motors (CGWright)

My motor (bought it new) was in the same time frame, low hours and 2nd season. Yamaha said the problem is the calibration of certain oil injector pumps. The calibration is generally okay for low RPM or WOT running, but at mid range, there is a short supply of oil. Apparently Yamaha knows the part number of the pumps and motors involved.
For me, its going on the 2nd week(add that to the 5 weeks they had it for the power head work), and I'm still waiting for my pump and dealer fix. I noticed the latest Series 2 HPDI advertises "a new recalibrated oil injection system".
I just want this to be over with so I can go fishing!

Mid range is where most of my time was spent!

Yup, that is the worst part of it! Especially in the limited season we have here. I feel your pain!

I just took my 200 HPDI in for this. They said that the oil pump was causing one cylinder to lean out on some engines causing powerhead failure. If you will look on the oil pump linkage there will be a five didget number mine was 60Z12.You can call your dealer to see if your is a problem pump.

I haven't had my boat for two seasons due to bad starting, cutting out. Is this possibly the problem?

Re: Trouble for HPDI motors (MS Skeeter)

My oil injection pump is stamped with part #60V12. My motor is going in tomorrow for the pump replacement, we'll see what number the new pump is carrying. After all this effort, I sure hope this is the cure. Has anyone requested, and received, a print out of their moter's diagnostic info?. Is this typically available to the customer from the dealer?

Talked to dealer today and he said Yamaha was aware of problem. He is researching my serial number to see if my motor is affected. He also said that on those that were, they were replacing the pumps and also running a compression check to see i f any damage had already occurred. Will post when I hear.

Seems like most everybody with a late model HPDI is on the list, makes you wonder how big the problem is. Good luck with your motor, mine's still at the dealer, will post the results when I get it back.

Re: Trouble for HPDI motors (eal4500)

We sell a TON of Yamaha HPDI motors and I've not heard of a massive issue. I'll see 2 of the top 3 execs from Yamaha on Thursday at a dealer meeting, I'll ask them. We've had a few blow up , but we also sell a ton of them. I can only imagine what would happen if I drove my car at top RPM every time I drove it.

    I'm sure everything is OK.

    Matt
