Might be your front differential....which would not be good at all....![]()
Have you ever had your front differential serviced?
no i havent so if i drive it in 2wd it will be ok and wont mess any thing up

I'm just speculating from what you've said, and since I haven't seen it I could be way off. Since the only time you hear a noise is when the front diff is engaged, I would think that would be culprit. If you leave it unengaged then you should be fine.
My ram is doing the same thing right now. I only hear it in 4WD and when I am making a turn. Mechanic at S&S said the same thing as Scott that it is probably the front differential. I'm going to have it serviced here soon. I'll let you know if it fixes mine.
I get the same noise from my '04 Silverado when in 4WD and especially when making a turn in 4WD. I never thought that it was abnormal since my previous truck did the same thing but now you guys got me thinking... It's definitely not the hubs because you would be able to hear that even in 2 wheel and I had those replaced by the dealer when I bought it after hearing a different noise. I'm also curious to see if servicing your differential changes things. Keep us posted.![]()

shouldnt be the hub assemblies..if its an auto 4wd explorer the hubs are always engaged,And yes they would growl in 2 wd also.If the pavement is dry and your turning slow it isnt abnormal to hear a grinding or clunking,And if its the push button type they are known to lose vacuum and not totally switch the transfer case over. But if the fluid in the transfer and differential has never been looked at it would be a good first step to drain and refill and go from there
i will try that first ty while im at it i will check the hubs
