sugestions for starting a Merc 150 efi thats been sitting for over 2 years.

I would appreciate some advice from the Merc mechanics on the board here.

1996 Merc 150 efi thats been unused between 2 and 3 years except for cranking and idling around at the ramp for maybe 10 minutes last july.

What would be my best bet for getting this engine in good running condition without damaging it, since it has been unused for so long.

Its my boat, and there were no issues cept for a non working trim guage when it was parked, back before the divorce.

I'm have good mechanical skills and prefer to do as much as i can myself.

    thanks in advance

I would Drain the tank and fill up with fresh fuel, check the fuel lines and make sure the inner liners aren't peeling or coming apart (grey lines with orange or red writing are out-dated fuel lines and should be replaced with new EPA approved lines). Check/replace fuel filter(s). A new bulb, new spark plugs, new water impellor & gaskets, and replace the lower unit oil. Check you transom bolts, bracket assm, and steering cables.

It would also be a good idea to send your injectors out to Don at European Marine to have them cleaned and calibrated. This will not only get you maximun performance but can be an engine saver in case you have a lean running injector.

I bought a boat @ auction with 2000 225 efi and the electric fuel pump in the VST was locked. Had to buy a new one ($450.00) I don`t know if yours is like mine, but sometimes you can soak it in sea foam and get it to break free (wasn`t that lucky). Don can help you I sent my injectors to him and had them cleaned and flow tested and found one to be way to lean and he fixed me up with a replacement. Good luck

    My suggestions would be:

-Drain ALL FUEL 100% dry... start with a FRESH load of fuel.

    -Clean VST assembly COMPLETELY.

-Clean/Service Fuel Injectors. Calibrate if needed. This is also a good time to consider reeds (you're almost there anyway). http://www.europeanmarine.org/injectorservice.html

-Replace fuel line from tank to engine (including primer bulb). Also replace ALL recommended items found in the following post (fuel filter, pulse fuel pump rebuild, etc):

    http://www.bbcboards.net/zerot...first

    -Replace water pump

    -Change Gear Lube

    -Replace spark plugs

-Inspect oil lines, tanks, fittings. REPLACE any lines that are brittle, cracked, or hardened.

-It wouldn't be a BAD idea to DUMP all oil from the remote tank, CLEAN the pickup screen, and FLUSH fresh oil through the system to ensure a clean, FRESH supply of oil to the oil pump.

-When restarting the engine for the first time... ensure that EITHER an oil pump prime sequence has been completed (later models), OR PREMIX FUEL IS UTILIZED (earlier mechanical pump models). It's CRITICAL that oil be readily available when the engine is started.
