Before I recarpeted my trailer, I researched on the site and got lots of good ideas. Now that I have finished it, I will share what I larned.
1. Buy new bunk boards. My old bunks were still good, but I would have to remove over 1000 staples. New pressure treated YellaWood from Home Depot was about $20. Be careful about getting the sawdust on you as it will irrate your skin.
2. Buy a Stanley electric stapler from Lowes. $29, model TRE550. I used about 1200 staples and never had a jam. I used both Arrow and Stanley 3/8 inch stanless staples. The Stanley were better because that stayed stuck in the sleve and were easier to load. I also preferred their storage box. Also press the staple gun hard against the carpet before shooting the staple so it will go it all the way. Otherwise it might stick out some and you will need to hammer it in.
3. YellaWood is soft. My trailer bunks are held on with 3/8 inch lag screws. Be sure and drill a small pilot hole. I first drilled too large a hole and as the wood continued to dry, the screws became loose. I redriilled with 3/16 bit and hopefully that will hold.
Overall I spent $20 on bunk boards, $50 on staple gun and staples, $100 on carpet from MFI and $50 for the inner fenders already carpted.
I read that some people can do this in 2 hours. It took me 2 days, but I am very pleased with the results. Ed
