    New problem on 300xs

Well I went to the lake this morning and the motor started up great. I put it in gear and put some throttle in it wouldn't allow me to get above 2,000 RPM. The Guardian said that it has too much RPM for neutral. Is there a switch or sensor somewhere that tells the motor thats it is in gear. The motor is actually in gear but something isn't reconizing it though. It didn't do it all the time. I actually got to fish but liked to never got it loaded up. What do yall think the problem could be.

I did some research and have got it narrowed down to two switches. I found on on the port side of the motor under thr cowl. It is on the linkage and it does work, checked it first. I got my book out on the shifter and it says there is one that goes from the ingition to the shifter via yellow/red wire. I traced the wires down and didn't see one. Did I miss something or is it just hidden or small.

Re: New problem on 300xs (B_Thompson)

The switch in question here will be the SHIFT POSITION SWITCH, located on the shift bracket- attached to the PORT SIDE OF THE ENGINE.

The shift in the control only provides "start in gear protection".

Check for excessive grease in the slide area that may be preventing the white button on the switch from coming out properly.

Also verify that the CABLE ATTACHMENT NUT is not overtightened. This nut should be turned down "snug", and then backed off 1/2-3/4 turn (so that the black plastic washer can rotate freely.... this is presuming that your engine is a nut/washer connection, of course).

If the problem persists: REPLACE THE SHIFT POSITION SWITCH.

There is some white grease on the shift assembly under the cowl. My dad and I did check the swith by ohming it out and it worked. I will try to clean it and see what happens. If the problem persists what would be the next source of action.
