    -------- EDIT --------

Googled Maxi Plank and the company filed for bankruptcy due to a class action lawsuit about defective products. Might want to look into that as you may not be able to get warranty work if you have a problem.

Take a look at this (has photos of failed MaxiPlank also)

    --------------------------------------------------------------
    That being said,

Don't know about MaxiPlank, but we had our house resided with James Hardie 3 years ago. It's top notch stuff.

We had the Louisiana Pacific pressed board crap that had problems (the stuff from the 1990's class action lawsuit). Finally just had it all ripped off, installed some insulating house wrap over the sheathing as a vapor barrier (Hardie approved) and then the hardieplank on top of that. The house is noticibly quieter. I also got a little bit of a break on my insurance as the cement board siding is fire rated the same as solid brick. We did all the facia and other trim with Hardie products as well. The brickmold around the windows is painted PVC. So I now have nothing to rot or worry about. As to rot, I've got a few pieces of trim that I put in direct contact with the dirt in my garden (unpainted, just the primed stuff) 3 years ago. No evidence of water absorption or problems yet (even on the bare cut edges). It's good stuff even with just their primer on it

I bet with the housing business in the dumpper like it is, you can get some very good bids on the work right now and have it professionally installed.

PS - the quote I got 3 years ago was pretty much the same as installing vynil or alluminum siding would have been (all with tearout of the crappy LP stuff). For the quality of HardiePlank, there is no way I would even consider using vynil or aluminum ever again.

I live in the Metro Atlanta area and there is one Hardie approved installer that constantly advertises 1,000 sq feet installed and painted for $3,995. So real Hardie deals are out there. It took just under 4,000 sq feet to do my 2,200 sq ft single story house (with daylight basement on one side).

Stick with Hardie or Certainteed. Be sure to have it factory primed, and then have it painted with Sherwin-Williams Duration paint. They will give you a lifetime warranty on the paint.

I used Certainteed. Very happy with it.
