    CHEAP rod wraps...

Posted this some time ago but guy told me to post it agian...so here goes.

I use the tennis racket wraps that Wal-Mart sells. You get three for the price of one BPS wrap. I also have all the same brand rods...so i color coordinate my wraps so that I don't have to look at the rod to see the action when tying on baits the night before going fishing...orange is crankbait rods, yellow is med rods and black is med/hvy. I also use tennis grips, but I use the (what a grip )one piece that you slide over the end of the rod...They are smooth....You can get different colors...I have them on every rod

Chris, I've never seen the ones that you're talking about. I use the ones that wal-mart sells too. Can you post a link to this?

    Re: CHEAP rod wraps... (chris_ken23)

The handle on one of my premium rods was a bit small for my taste (it's like they whittled the cork down a bit too much on the lathe). So to compensate, I bunched up some tennis wrap. I kept it just in the area that my hand holds and since it's bunched up (and contoured to my grip), I have a cushion there now that makes it comfy to fish.

While I don't have the collection that a lot of you guys have and actually prefer the look of the rods as manufatured, what about that heat shrink tubing? It comes in various colors and sizes.

The main benefit that I've found with the wraps is it has kind of tacky feel to it that gives a little better grip than cork. My experience with heat shrink is it usually has a more slick outer surface. I'm not saying they don't make it with a more tacky outside but I haven't seen it if they do. Also heat shrink is made to seal whatever you're using it on so it has a glue on the inside which would make it a little more difficult to replace. With the wraps you just peel them off and put another on. It takes about 5 minutes.

Re: CHEAP rod wraps... (super man 2)

Why do you guys wrap the handles of your rods? To me all this would do is add weight... and with the bad shoulders I have I'm always looking for the lightest rod/reel combos I can afford. Is it for grip? I've not had issues with rods slipping out of my hands.

    Re: CHEAP rod wraps... (waterfoul)

Well the original posted did say he used it to color code his rods based on action. I don't have that problem as I only have 3 rods that aren't for trolling and they are all ultra light action

Ca one of you guys that have the slide on wraps post a pic of your rod please? I've never seen one before. I get the concept but I would like to see what they look like on the rod. Where else besides academy sells them also? There isn't an academy within 2 hours of me.

Here is a picture (as requested) of the "Whatagrip" tennis racket grip mentioned above. It is a non rubber, one piece, slip-on grip. They are easy to put on and will not slip. They have a good feel to them, and will not leave any sticky residue when removed. I only wish they were a little longer. I have Blue, Black, Gray, and Purple (not pictured). They are available at Wal-Mart and other sporting goods retailers for less than $2 each.
