    Repainting cowling...need advice

Hey guys. I repaired a hole in my cowling. There are a few spots where the previous owner had used a repair stick for longer scratches. Since I have a pretty large area sanded down to the fiberglass after re-glassing the hole, I figured I'd sand it all down and repaint the whole top cowling (except the back louvers). I might repaint the l/u since it's scratched up pretty well too. I have a few questions: on colorite's page, the cowling is showing that 00NA (shiny black) also for the l/u...is this the right color? Also, it calls for 1554 base coat...is that correct? Next, what kind of primer should I use on top of the sanded fiberglass (and l/u if different)? Finally, what kind of clear coat should I use?

It appears I can go with aerosol cans (easy) or with mixing paint/reducer and using a gravity feed gun. Is the finish with the aerosol bad enough to warrant a spray booth job? If the bulk paint method is best, what amount of paint/primer/base/clear should I get? It comes in 1/2 pint incriments. Might as well ask this too, should I put body filler over visible glass strands that have are shown after sanding. It's smooth to the hand...or will the primer and base coat be thick enough to cover it? Maybe prime it and wet sand the area and re-prime prior to base coat.

    Thanks for the help.

Obviously I read that...no where in it does it answer any of the questions I had.

Prep the cowling for painting by filling scratches and sanding well.

Merc has the paint and primer in rattle cans on their site or at a local Merc Dealer :

Primer is under the Miscellaneous button.

you can use nason 421-19 primer and actvater.you can put it over bare spots in the fiber glass and it is a high fill and will fill any small inperfections and sands easy, its not to pricey.final sand with 320grit.i would use a base clear and then wet sand and buff will give a good end result and if its a merc black is black.u can use nason base coat black its about 30 bucks a quart just tell ur local auto paint store u want gm or ford black.u can also use nason clear but i prefer to step it up on the clear to dupont chroma clear its way better as nason clear has a bit of a color to it or dirty tint(yellow)its a little pricy but good stuff, sand ur primer smooth, reduce ur base coat 2:1 then spray ur base give it a half hour then clear let dry24hours just to be safe and wet sand any dirt or such out with 1500 grit and buff with a compound.u can use nason sigle stage and eliminate the clear but it wont be as purdy! hope this helps ya!if ya do the lower unit and have any bare metal spots use etch prime then prime. one pint each will be enough base coat and clear for cowl and lower 8 ounces wont do it i dont believe.rattle cans wont give as good results it all depends on what ur lookin for or what u want it to look like,u can do it it aint hard to mix and spray.
