Re: lower unit paint (canadian bassman)

    Might try boatersworld.com.

That's where I found mine for my L/U however the trick is getting it to stick. What you want to do is use some etching primer so that the paint has a better chance to hold. If you don't prep with the etching primer your L/U will look like it did just after a few runs. Paint doesn't hold well to aluminum with corrosion and all.

    Re: lower unit paint (Mays2ndd)

well I finally recieved the paint today from colorite. I sanded the entire lower unit down and followed the instructions to the letter....the color match is exact and the clear makes it look as if I just bought it..So far so good. It said I cant wet sand for 3-5 days and wax for 2-3 weeks
It doesnt say how long to not allow water on it but Im assuming if I can wet sand it in 3-5 I can allow it to run in water also

    thoughts on this ???

    Re: lower unit paint (Mays2ndd)

My experience is it will take 3-5 days to get hard enough to sand without clogging the paper. And it takes 2-3 weeks to fully cure. You can probably take the boat out after 5 days but keep in mind the paint is not fully cured. That means the full strength of the finish has not been achieved. If nothing comes in contact with the finish you'll be fine, but you are taking a chance.
Another thing to consider is your transom saver, if you trim your freshly painted lower unit into the transom saver before it is FULLY CURED you will most likely mar or wrinkle the paint. When I painted my lower unit with Imron, I let it cure the recomended time and I put heavy duty felt adhesive backed stips onto the sides of the hard plastic V that catches the lower unit. The strips have stayed put, the lower unit looks great, and its been 2 1/2 years. The felt I'm talking about is the kind sold at hardware stores for the bottom of furniture.
One more thing, I'm assuming your boat doesn't stay in the water. If it did then I would certainly wait the 2-3 weeks before extended submersion.

OK just one more thing, Unless you got a huge sag in your paint job, I wouldn't color sand it, it is just the lower unit after all..

never mind the previous post....I just went out it rained and water marks are all over it.....sadly I think Im well.......its blotchy with the drips of the rain making the lower a lighter shade, I had hoped well over 12hr would be ok or will those blotches just dry out
