Not a bass boat, but I have a question about buffing....

A friend of mine has an 85 bayliner capri, and we were wondering if that boat has Gel Coat on it or not. And if it does, I have a buffer and was wondering what would be the most economical way to get most of the shine back from that boat?

Would some type of cleaner wax be the best bet?

If it is fiberglass,it should be gel coat.
I have a combination wax/polishing compund that I believe is made by 3M,I'll have to look at it,bought it at Walmart in the boating section.
It works good for taking out scratches and light oxidation.
Depends on how bad the boat is oxidized.
If it is real bad you'll have to use something more aggressive and then step up to a finer compound.
If the oxidation is real bad you might go right through the gel coat.

I don't think its that bad, the boats always been covered and stored in the shade.

What kind of pads did you use to apply it?

    And thanks!

I used a pad that looks kind of like lambs wool on the buffer.
It has a little more bite than the terry towel types.
Just remeber not to get it too hot.
Cover your capet and everything else it will sling the stuff everywhere.
Don't load the pad with the compound

For the best shine on gel, use a rotary buffer with a wool pad. The 3M restorer/wax is pretty good stuff. If it doesn't remove all of the oxidation then go to a little heavier compound. Follow up with a good wax for longer protection. Take a look a properboatcare.com for some good info on restoring oxidized finishes.
