    Ultrex?

112 ultrex was working fine except the lower unit is too hot to touch. Obviously we quit using it. Any ideas what would cause this

Do you happen to have lithium batteries, and did you happen to run it past 8.5 for an extended period of time?

Yes and yes. But I actually have been doing this on our other boat for years though without any issues.

    PER MANUAL

"Minn Kota trolling motors can run on Lithium-Ion batteries. However, they are specifically designed to run on traditional lead acid
batteries (flooded, AGM or GEL). Lithium-Ion batteries maintain higher voltages for longer periods of time than lead-acid. Therefore,
running a Minn Kota trolling motor at speeds higher than 85% for a prolonged period could cause permanent damage to the motor."

The good news is that running 85% on a lithium battery runs the motor as fast as 100% on a lead acid, so you're not really losing anything.
