You can't get any closer than this one: http://www.jannsnetcraft.com/t....aspx

PACIFIC BAY MINIMA TRIGGER REEL SEAT, SS HOOD
    Catalog # 280440
Pacific Bay 2 piece Minima Trigger Reel Seats are up to 30% lighter than regular reel seats. The Minima design puts the fishermen in direct contact with the rod blank for maximum sensitivity. Reel seat body parts are molded graphite.

    Re: Reel seats? (87GT183)

Call Bob at Custom Tackle and ask him about the St. Croix blank that he likes for Shakey heads. The numbers are 3SW70MLF. It's actually an inshore blank but the action is perfect for shakey head fishing. I've had 5 or 6 blanks from different manufactures in my hands and that one is the best I've found. As far as the real seat goes you might try Lance at Swampland Tackle. You won't find a better guy to deal with. http://www.swamplandtackle.com/ You may as well wait until next week if you haven't tried call any of these places yet. There's a rod builders expo in NC this weekend and most all of the supplier's will be there.

Best place to buy all your rod making supplies is http://www.kingcustomrods.com/

I was told he is going to be a board sponsor here very soon. He has the best prices around, too.
Check him out and tell him Tim mentioned him.

The Carrot Stick reelseat is just a copy of what Rich Forhan developed, and what custom builders have been doing on their own for a long time. I have been splitting ECSM reelseats for my rods for the last 7 years. The truly best seat to do this with is the Castaway seat sold by http://www.swamplandtackle.com. Any of the off the shelf split seats have to shallow of a recess in the trigger portion which can result in your reel popping out of the seat when a big fish is on. Just get a castaway and split it yourself, it will be MUCH better.

As far as vendors, I use http://www.customtackle.com for about 70% of my needs, http://www.mudhole.com and various others for the rest. I would recommend selecting one of the vendors that has been in the game for a while and establish a relationship with them. Bob McCamey at Custom Tackle is one of the best in the business, you will be hard pressed to get better advise from any vendor than Bob.

I have to disagree with that. The Pac Bay seat pictured is a very fine seat as is Super Sticker products. The only advantage a split ECSM has over the PacBay is weight savings. But when you factor in time etc. in general, it may not be worth making your own, especially when the seats are about the same price to begin with. I only make my own for very lightweight applications.

I also feel the same about making RF lite reel seats vs Castaways. Usually, it's a smarter move touse theirs, unless you are reaching for the highest of marks.

    Re: Reel seats? (PA Officer)

It takes me less than 5 minutes to split an ECSM and clean the edges for install. It is simply a better reelseat. It has a deeper recess section for the foot than the Castaway or PacBay. And, if it is lighter it is well worth it.

Also the trigger shape is a bit different on the pay bay, not much, but a little. I just like the ECSM for split seats. The castaway is very nice also, I use alot of them, but I am used to the ECSM.

    Re: Reel seats? (Bassn81)

i've got several going on the pac bay minima seats (spinning and casting). There was some conjecture about the reels popping out because of the prev. issues with the castaway and airrus seats, but after trying a variety of spinning and casting reels of different sizes in all of them i'm convinced that if the hood is fully tightened, this is a non-issue. Overall happy with them, very light and nice design, only detraction to that is it would be nice if the threaded piece was sized to the blank to match the rear portion as it currently needs to be arbored to somewhere in the neighborhood of 3/8" if i remember right.
Splitting an exposed blank seat would fix that issue, but i don't know of a spinning seat that would serve that purpose unless you plan on grinding off the trigger of a casting seat.

    Re: Reel seats? (thedude)

The biggest difference that I've noticed between splitting a seat yourself and buying one is that the ones that you buy are nothing but threads on the front portion of the seat, so you're tightening down the reel onto the threads which WILL wear grooves into them. With splitting your own you can leave just a little of the bed of the seat and avoid that. The first rod I built for myself was last spring and I put the castaway seat on it and it's already got worn spots starting on the threads.
