I was getting ready to buy Optimas, but more than several people I talked to online and in person warned me against them. I figured if that many people had problems I'd stay away.

I wound up sticking with Deka....they've treated me well so far, especially for the cost!

You mean for the Optimas? The one's I questioned everyone about were the Gel.

As for the Dekas, I just use the wet. The AGM's post some impressive numbers, but both the price and the weight are too high for me.

I use the blue top optimas. I lost two in 14 months and they were fully replaced. I have had two others for about 10 months and have had no problems with them. They seem to keep the charge alot longer than the DEKA's I used to use. I can fish a two day tournament really without charging. Not that I would do that. They also charge up very fast. I would replace mine with Optima's again. But I have heard the Bass pro shops AGM's are very good also.

Re: Trolling motor batteries (Mark L)

The other problem with the Optima Gel's is your charger. You need to make sure your charger has a switch to change to Gel before hooking them up. Standard chargers that aren't rated for Gel type batteries charge the battery way too fast, and you can blow em up. The batteries will get super hot. Just ask Robert Stamey (BBBAC1).

I have a Minn Kota 3-bank and it states right on the top that it's "not for use with gel batteries".

If you're looking for the "top-of-the-line", from all my research I would say the Trojan AGM's have the best numbers.....

But they are high $$$ everywhere I looked.

a word of warning concering the chargers, even if it does charge the Gel's, you will have to have ALL batteries that the carger is charging the same type. so, if you have a three bank charger working on two trolling batteries, and one starting battery, they have to all be gel's.

I bought a optima for starting and needless to say I will be using it in the little boat and get another Cabela AGM battery to replace it. Cranks the big motor just fine, but running the fishfinders they easily lose voltage. Bought 2 Cableas AGM for the TM and really like them. Plenty of power and last a long time. Only takes a few hours to charge after a full day of using them.

I was fortunate enough to have won a guest 3 bank charger at the Va rally 2 years ago. The guest allows you to program each individual bank for the battery type.

Each to his own, Use the AC Delco C24HP 1000 CCA for starting, and M27,s or the M29's for trolling Good Luck

    Re: Trolling motor batteries (Rangerman)

My AC Delco's did a good job. They lasted 5 1/2 yrs. I just replaced my cranking battery and went with Deka. From what i have been told is true the AC Delco's are now being made in Mexico and are not the same quality they once were. Sam's Club has the Optima's 34 group for $155.oo. I paid $100.oo for the Deka with tax and core exchange.
