Hot summer time fishing... Carolina Rig or deep cranking?

When it's hot and tough fishing (like now for me) what is your prefered deep water tactics for catching bass in the summer? If you had to choose one rig to throw all day, would it be a deep diving crank, carolina rig, or something else. Just trying to see if I can minimize the spanking I'm going to get this weekend in a club tourney.

If a carolina rig is the method of choice, how are you rigging, what length leader, carolina keeper, or methods do you use. I hate throwing a c-rig and have only ever caught one fish on it. Don't worry about helping "this brother" out over somebody else... most everyone I will be fishing against will read your response as well.

    Thanks for any input

I would choose a carolina rig /with a floating worm 16" leader, or a big 10.5" tex rig worm, It stays in the zone longer, and for me it's easier to find the structure. I tried cranking but after a hundred casts in the heat I get wore out. Throw out the c-rig or worm and lean up against the seat.

Chip. are you talking about throwing the CR in the river? I've heard of a bunch of folks doing it but I haven't tried it. I've had a lot of success throwing it in lakes though, especially deep in the the summer.

Looking forward to hearing all the responses.

Do not let the plastic hit the bottom. Drop shot, top water or light weight t-rig....

Forgive me if I am wrong but I caught on to several potomac river references... If that is where you are talking about neither.... Fish are in shallow water. If the temp is 83 or less flip them out of the matts... 84 or higher fish the outside deeper edges with 7" texas rigs and senko's..... 84 or higher, fish really really slow.

I would rather throw a deep diving crankbait! But this time of year I will have the CR also out on deck and a 1 1/2 oz hopkins spoon out on deck and work each peice of structure with each!

I love a c-rig! We c-rig even shallow. 2' leader...I do not use a heavy weight, but do use swivel and bead, with just about any plastic you can think of.

And T-rig big worms...and use unweighted Senkos...

Have caught nice fish in as little as 1' of water even in hot summer. (and once I caught a nice keeper fish on a black buzzbait in less than a foot of water in Mid-December. You just never know!!!!)

Deep crank all the way.....and dont be scared to dig a ditch with it on some main lake points. You can flat-out load the boat in a hurry with a deep crank this time of year.

If you are fishing the perquimans, I would say neither. I would fish shallow next to drop-offs with a texas rig or jig, and def. try a buzzbait or popper in the morning. Even though its hot, fish will still be shallow.

Re: Hot summer time fishing... Carolina Rig or deep cranking? (Lea)

Lea, I was speaking in general terms during the summer. I hate throwing a C-rig. I have thrown it in the past but have zero confidence in it as I have only ever caught one fish on it.

I never fished deep yesterday on the Perquimans. I stayed with my gut instincts and hit a few areas recommended to me and found three keepers with the biggest at four pounds. I caught a bunch of fish all day long, however they were small.

I just need to get my act together and learn how to fish deeper water in the summer.
