Lightning Gear Case on Johnson 175!!

I have a 2004 Stratos 285 Magnum w/ a 175 Johnson motor, it has the magnum gear case...Are there any advantages to adding a lightning gear case to it?...I found one at a local boat dealer here and they suggested taking all the guts out of my old gear case and installing them into the lightning gear case...I thought the lightning lower units had a different gear ratio?..do they?...

I'd have serious doubts about that dealer since magnum gears are much larger and will not fit inside a Lightning case.

The original Lightning case came with 1.86:1 gears The new L2 comes with 1.71:1 ratio. Unless you are running in the 80 + MPH you will not see a difference in performance and may actually see a loss in top end. Stick with the magnum.

Doesn't the 60 degree 20" Johnson have the smaller O2(?) gearcase with 1.86:1 gears?

Thanks for the info, but why does the 150HO eTec come with a lightning gear case, I know its not a 80 mph motor...

the Lightning is a faster gearcase due to its design compared to the larger and slower Magnum styles on high performance boats, whether they run in the 80's or in the 60's.

Also there is a thing called marketing ! That is the reason for the "bold colorful graphics" on the motor covers, which, by the way, do not add any speed or performance.

I don't think it will help you much considering the price for just a couple of mph. .
