Ok, so if I painted my boat in the color I wanted in auto paint (I have some on hand), then went over it with clear gelcoat, wouldn't that keep the auto paint from fading?? Tell me what would be wrong with this idea? Wouldn't this save money?

Your gelcoat would not have a bond to the auto paint..... Also, gelcoat is cheaper and, in my opinion, easier to work with than paint.

Where do I need to get gelcoat from? Can I get detailed instructions for painting gelcoat? I thought about going simple if I repainted my boat. Doing the whole top cap in a royal blue w/black flake, and just doing the whole bottom half of the boat white. If I'm thinking right, for both halves I prep them by, cleaning them, roughen the surface a little, apply a pre-cleaner. Then for the top spray primer, then my blue gelcoat, then clear gelcoat with black flake, then a top clear gelcoat. Then for the bottom I spray primer, then white gelcoat, then two coats of clear gelcoat. Does this sound right?
